About this wine
Character
A ripe, delicately spiced Chardonnay from Southern Styria, bringing together bright fruit, a dark stony impression, and subtle tannins.
Terroir and Origin
Pfarrweingarten is a monopole site, a sheltered south-facing amphitheatre with steep slopes at 380 metres above sea level. The soil combines Opok—composed of clay and marl—with shell and coral limestone. The grapes are sourced from the vineyard's old vines.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Single-varietal Chardonnay, known in Styria as Morillon. Harvested at full ripeness, fermented dry to 1.1 g/l residual sugar with 5.7 g/l acidity, followed by 18 months on the lees in first- and second-fill barriques of 225 and 300 litres. The alcohol content is 13.5% ABV, and the wine is dry.
On the Palate
Silky soft and round, underpinned by juicy, melting, ripe white-fleshed fruit. Vibrant acidity and an equally lively minerality lend the wine its taut drive. On the nose, blanched nuts, almonds, and wax, joined by yellow apples, apple peel, starfruit, and physalis over a touch of chalk.
Food Pairings
Pairs wonderfully with roasted saddle of veal with morel cream sauce, turbot with brown butter, and mature mountain cheese.
Special Features
Südsteiermark DAC, grown on the steep slopes around Gamlitz, where Willi and Andrea Sattler have developed the estate since the 1980s. Bottled by the family-run winery Sattlerhof under the organic certification code AT-BIO-402.
