About this wine

Character

The Ried Zieregg Sauvignon Blanc Vinothek Reserve Grosse STK Lage 2019 is a dry white wine from Southern Styria that gives little away in its youth. A decanter, a large glass, and time are essential; only then does it begin to unfold its story. Herbal notes take the lead rather than overt fruit.

Terroir and Origin

Ried Zieregg near Ehrenhausen extends across the Austrian-Slovenian border and, due to its multifaceted nature, is divided into 17 individual parcels. The grapes for the Vinothek Reserve originate from "Die Sieben Reihen", an extremely steep, well-ventilated parcel with blue limestone marl soils. The old vines here grow exceptionally small bunches and yield concentrated, dense musts.

Grape Variety and Vinification

100% Sauvignon Blanc, harvested by hand, spontaneously fermented, and aged for 36 months in neutral wooden casks. The wine is dry and has an alcohol content of 13.0% vol.

On the Palate

The nose remains disciplined: sage, lemon balm, and ginger set the pace, accompanied by the citrusy, cedary piquancy of white pepper. The fruit remains understated—grapefruit zest, lemon blossom, cassis leaf, and green mango—underpinned by saline nuances of crushed oyster shells and wet blackboard chalk. The entry is compressed, almost austere, revealing layer upon layer with aeration. The acidity provides the pulse, while the grippy phenolics coat the edges of the tongue. The body remains muscular without ever turning broad.

Food Pairings

Baked aubergine with a coulis of red and green bell peppers and fennel yoghurt, silken tofu with young peas and langoustine, as well as saddle of rabbit with spring onions, young peas, and celeriac fumet.

Special Attributes

Manfred Tement co-founded the Steirische Klassik (STK) in 1986 alongside like-minded winemakers. The estate began its transition to biodynamic farming in 2017 and completed its Demeter certification in 2022; the 2019 vintage falls within this conversion period. A Sauvignon Blanc that undoubtedly ranks among the great expressions of its variety.
