About this wine

Character

A dry-styled Riesling of crystalline clarity, the kind the Peter Jakob Kühn estate has pursued for years: lemon, green apple and white peach, underpinned by fine herbal spice and cool minerality. The large Magnum format gives it time for a slow evolution.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from the Berg Schlossberg vineyard in the Rheingau. Jacobus Kühn founded the estate in 1786 in Oestrich-Winkel; today Peter Bernhard and Viktoria Kühn run the estate in its twelfth generation. Across the 21 hectares, almost exclusively Riesling vines grow; slate and quartzite lend their cool character.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Riesling from biodynamic farming under Demeter guidelines, with sheep grazing between the rows, horn manure and valerian preparations. In the cellar the hand stays light: spontaneous fermentation, no fining, minimal sulphur use, no heavy oak ageing. Peter Bernhard Kühn brought back a sharpened sense for acid structure and extraction from stints in Alsace and with Burgundy producers.

On the palate

Taut and linear, carried by vibrant acidity and juicy extract. The finish remains saline, mineral and long. At 12.0% vol., the wine stays light on its feet.

Food pairing suggestions

With steamed turbot and sole with beurre blanc, with roast chicken with lemon and thyme, and with Thai curry with coconut milk.

Special features

Demeter logo on the label; the estate has been certified biodynamic since 2009. Bottled in a 1500ml Magnum.
