About this wine
Character
A dry Rheingau Riesling that seeks its greatness through tension rather than sheer body: coolly contoured, taut, full of energy. Spice and herbs lead, the fruit stays in the background.
Terroir and origin
The plot lies on the eastern edge of Oestrich, at 120 metres above sea level, with a 15 % south-facing slope. The subsoil is lime-rich loess loam with terraced sediments from the primordial sea, threaded with veins of Taunus quartz. The site is exposed to the wind and stays cool, so the grapes ripen slowly and healthily.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling. The whole clusters are pressed slowly and gently, and fermentation happens spontaneously with natural yeasts. This is followed by sixteen months on full lees in traditional 1200-litre casks and 2400-litre double casks. In the glass: 11.5 % vol., 3.6 g/l residual sugar and 7.4 g/l acidity.
On the palate
The nose opens with ripe peach, yellow plum, mirabelle and golden pear, followed by persimmon, turmeric and saffron. With air, cubeb pepper, allspice and cardamom emerge, along with dried marjoram, sage, fresh bay leaf and lemon thyme, underscored by freshly chopped almonds. On the palate, the spicy, herb-driven nuances take the lead, and the wine immediately gets the saliva flowing. Acid drive and spice push against the fruit, the minerality stays delicate, the texture clear and lively. The finish is bright and pure.
Food pairings
Pan-fried pike-perch with herbs, delicate fish in a light butter sauce, or veal with sage.
Distinctive features
The estate in Oestrich-Winkel has existed since 1786 and is now run in its twelfth generation by Peter Bernhard Kühn and his wife Viktoria. The 21 hectares, planted almost entirely to Riesling, have been Demeter-certified since 2009, and the seal appears on the label. The same restraint applies in the cellar: spontaneous fermentation, no fining, minimal use of sulphur.
