About this wine
Character
Bone-dry and linear, purist, without ever seeming austere or forbidding. Medium straw yellow, with a nose that is very pure and stony, as if pebbles from the vineyard's hillside gravel lay in the glass, alongside crisp green and yellow stone fruit, citrus notes, blossoms and lichen.
Terroir and origin
The vineyard lies in the Siebeldingen site Im Sonnenschein on the Haardt edge, where the Rhine plain gives way to the Palatinate Forest. The site faces south, spans 160 to 250 meters in elevation and has a 5 to 20% slope. The Riesling grows on the Siebeldinger Ganshorn parcel: while Im Sonnenschein is shaped by old Triassic soils with shell limestone, around 220 million years old, this parcel dates from the Pleistocene, around 1 million years, and consists mainly of gravel with variegated sandstone, gravel and loam.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling, destemmed and left on the skins for roughly 24 hours. After settling and natural sedimentation, the must fermented in stainless steel, and the wine then rested on fine lees for six months. 12.0% ABV, dry.
On the palate
Juicy and round with ripe stone fruit and a creamy texture, yet on a mineral, stony register: linear, with fine spice, light grip and vibrant minerality. It's remarkable how much depth and power this wine shows at just 12.0% ABV.
Special features
Since 2018 the wine has carried only the name Ganz Horn. Im Sonnenschein is a monopole site of the estate. Hansjörg and Birgit Rebholz run the estate in Siebeldingen together with their twin sons Hans and Valentin; the 26 hectares are farmed biodynamically, and the wines always ferment fully dry.
