About this wine

Character

A bone-dry Riesling of crystalline precision, exactly as the Rebholz family strives for in Siebeldingen: clearly defined, lean, fully fermented. The signature of this Grosses Gewächs lies in the soil, not in the cellar.

Terroir and origin

Most vineyards along the Haardt edge, in the transition zone between the Rhine plain and the Palatinate Forest, face east. Im Sonnenschein, by contrast, lies in the Queich valley and is south-facing, a monopole and one of the estate's top sites. The vines grow at 160 to 250 metres above sea level, on slopes of 5 to 20%, on shell limestone soil from the Triassic period.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling from 60-year-old vines, farmed biodynamically. After destemming, the must remained on the skins for 24 hours, followed by settling and natural sedimentation. Fermentation took place in stainless steel, after which the wine matured on its fine lees. 12.0% vol.

On the palate

The nose stays reserved, fine and elegant: the shell limestone brings a hint of smoke, along with oyster shells, stone and a touch of graphite, underpinned by juicy mirabelle plums, pears and apples. On the palate, the wine is considerably more present. Body and alcohol remain lean, the fruit bright, and over everything lies that mouth-watering salinity and minerality dictated by the soil, carried by a fresh acid structure.

Special features

Sixty-year-old vines, a south-facing shell limestone slope and an élevage that adds nothing: the purism of the house of Rebholz in a wine that comes across as precise and clear, yet sensual.
