About this wine
Character
The Riesling Jungfer Grosses Gewächs 2020 is a dry-vinified Rheingau Riesling at 12.5% vol. The nose is phenolic and extract-rich: a touch of hops, tobacco and sweet yeast, topped by floral notes of peonies, along with ripe grapes, apples and apple peel. The overall impression is dense yet juicy.
Terroir and origin
Kühn's parcel in the Hallgartener Jungfer lies at around 220 metres above sea level, directly above the Doosberg. The soil consists of erosion material from the Rheingau massif with a high quartzite content, mixed with loess loam. The gentle south-easterly exposure keeps the vineyard cool.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling. Restraint governs the cellar work: spontaneous fermentation, no fining, minimal use of sulphur. Ageing takes place in a Stockinger oak barrel acquired specifically for this purpose, in which the wine rests every vintage; as a result, the influence of the wood is barely noticeable.
On the palate
Sensual, silky, juicy and saline, with ripe fruit of apples, pears and ripe lemon. Despite its creaminess, the wine remains taut and firm, with extract and a firm grip. The length is outstanding, and the fullness comes without heaviness.
Food pairings
Grilled meagre in a broth of yellow tomatoes, ginger and fermented garlic pairs just as well as skewers of scallops fermented in Lemon Shijo Koji or white asparagus fermented in Soba Shiru Tamari and roasted.
Special features
The Peter Jakob Kühn estate in Oestrich-Winkel was founded in 1786 and is now run by the twelfth generation, Peter Bernhard and Viktoria. The 21 hectares are planted almost exclusively with Riesling and farmed biodynamically; since 2009 the estate has carried the Demeter seal. This bottle is a magnum of 1500 ml.
