About this wine

Character

A Riesling that draws its effect from clarity rather than opulence. The 2019 stands taut in the glass, with precise acidity and a mineral undertone. Dry at 12.5% ABV, yet without severity: a wine of quiet tension that continues to open up with air.

Terroir and origin

Oestrich-Winkel in the Rheingau. It was here that Jacobus Kühn founded the estate in 1786, which the family has never let out of its hands since. Across 21 hectares grow almost exclusively Riesling vines, rooted in slate and quartzite. These soils lend the cool minerality and fine spice that characterise the estate's wines.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling. Peter Jakob Kühn switched to biodynamic farming in the early 2000s: sheep grazing between the rows, horn manure and valerian. Since 2009 the estate has carried the Demeter certification. The same restraint applies in the cellar, with spontaneous fermentation, no fining, minimal use of sulphur and no heavy oak influence.

On the palate

Taut and juicy, with fine extract. Upfront, green apple and white peach, followed by lemon zest and a cool slate note. The finish remains long, saline and mineral.

Special features

The Demeter logo on the label attests to the biodynamic work for which the estate was initially met with scepticism in the Rheingau. It is now run in its twelfth generation by Peter Bernhard and Viktoria. Peter Bernhard brought experience from Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace and from Burgundy producers; since he joined in 2012, the wines' contours have sharpened.
