About this wine
Character
A Grand Cru of clear definition. On the nose, ripe lemon, yellow peach and apricot, backed by herbal spice and the smoky minerality that the Roter Hang lends its rieslings. The magnum format slows the wine's development: this bottle has many years ahead of it.
Terroir and origin
Pettenthal lies on the Roter Hang between Nierstein and Nackenheim. Weathered rotliegend defines the site and gives the wines their smoky spice. Alongside Pettenthal, Kühling-Gillot also farms Hipping, Ölberg and Rothenberg here; the Grand Crus from these sites rank among the finest German rieslings.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure riesling, vinified dry, 12.5% vol. Spontaneous fermentation, aged in large wooden casks and steel tanks, minimal use of sulphur, no fining agents. Carolin Spanier-Gillot and Hans Oliver Spanier guide the wine in the cellar rather than correcting it. The estate has farmed biodynamically since 2005, using preparations 500 and 501 and vineyard work timed to the lunar cycle.
On the palate
Dry, dense and powerful, carried by taut acidity. The fruit stays juicy without ever turning broad, underpinned by a saline minerality that carries the long finish.
Details
A Grand Cru from a VDP estate, from one of the most storied sites on the Roter Hang, bottled in magnum format, which allows the wine to mature more slowly.
