About this wine
Character
A powerful, complex Chardonnay that is only just beginning its development. In the glass, a radiant, deep golden yellow, above which rises an aroma of matchstick, yellow fruit and orange, alongside vanilla and freshly whipped butter, underlaid by wild herbs, undergrowth, forest floor and porcini mushrooms.
Terroir and origin
The vineyards of the Oppenheim vineyard area lie outside the direct influence of the Rhine and are shaped like an amphitheatre: they store warmth, allowing the grapes to ripen harmoniously. The soils are highly calcareous, shaped by limestone marl formations and overlaid with soft, wind-blown loess – ideal sites for the Burgundy varieties. The parcel is crossed by a solid limestone bedrock, where the grapes ripen a little more slowly. The pure limestone marl of Oppenheim.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Chardonnay. Carolin and Hans Oliver Spanier consistently thin the crop and select rigorously at harvest to pick small-berried, healthy and ideally ripened grapes. The golden yellow berries ferment in barriques and tonneaux, half of them new oak, the remaining barrels in second use. Both of the family's estates have worked biodynamically since 2005, with minimal use of sulphur and without fining agents.
On the palate
Powerful and complex, with a distinctive yet fine tannin structure that challenges the palate. A wine with great ageing potential that rewards patience and becomes more multifaceted over time. Be sure to decant and drink not too cold, from large glasses.
Food recommendations
Porcini carpaccio with argan oil and rosemary, crispy quail leg with foie gras filling, Chardonnay sauce and truffled celeriac purée, or monkfish grilled on the bone with aubergine, courgette, tomato, rosemary and olive oil.
Special features
The idea for this wine arose from observing the parcel; it has been bottled since the 2012 vintage. Kühling-Gillot and Battenfeld-Spanier run two VDP estates under a single biodynamic philosophy.
