About this wine

Character

A Riesling not about fruit, but about the liquefaction of a place. The nose offers a touch of blossom and citrus zest, along with smoke, lemon balm, yeast and crushed stone that rise from the glass like a fine haze. Medium straw yellow in the glass.

Terroir and origin

The Pettenthal in Nierstein belongs to the Roter Hang and is defined by Rotliegend, a red weathered rock of shaly clay and sandstone, with loam and clay in its gentler sections. Kühling-Gillot's central parcel sits at around 140 metres and has a slope gradient of over 70% — the steepest site in all of Rheinhessen. Humus is scarce here; the vines must root deep into the rock.

Grape variety and vinification

Riesling, hand-picked after rigorous selection. The must ferments spontaneously, and ageing takes place gently in large oak casks. Carolin Spanier-Gillot and Hans Oliver Spanier work without fining agents and with minimal use of sulphur; the cellar accompanies the wine rather than correcting it.

On the palate

Again slightly smoky, then gripping, powerful and tension-filled. Little fruit, but plenty of stone, extract and deep minerality. The arc of tension extends far into the future, yet the wine already feels absolutely precise and vibrantly alive, with an energetic acid backbone and elegant texture — a wine still in the making. 12.5% ABV, dry.

Food pairings

With grilled scallops with Kampot pepper and ginger-carrot jus, with salmon sashimi with piment d'Espelette and kumquat crème fraîche, or with dim sum with quail egg, truffle and potato.

Highlights

Kühling-Gillot has farmed the Roter Hang sites between Nierstein and Nackenheim biodynamically since 2005, using preparations 500 and 501 and working to a rhythm guided by the phases of the moon. The 1500 ml magnum format gives this vintage extra time to unfold.
