About this wine
Character
The Riesling Pettenthal GG 2023 is a dry Grosses Gewächs at 12.5% ABV, drawing its power from structure rather than opulence. Smoky spice sits alongside lemon zest and yellow apple, with a touch of white blossom and fresh herbs.
Terroir and origin
The Pettenthal vineyard lies on the Roter Hang between Nierstein and Nackenheim. Weathered Rotliegend soil defines the terrain here, giving the Rieslings that smoky minerality the slope is known for. Kühling-Gillot farms Pettenthal alongside the neighbouring sites Hipping, Ölberg and Rothenberg.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling, vinified dry. Carolin Spanier-Gillot and Hans Oliver Spanier have worked biodynamically since 2005: preparations 500 and 501, with lunar phases setting the rhythm of vineyard work. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks and steel tanks, minimal use of sulphur, no fining agents. The wine is guided, not corrected.
On the palate
Dry and taut, with clearly defined acidity woven into the body. Saline minerality runs through the whole wine, and the finish stays long and smoky.
Food pairing suggestions
Pan-fried turbot with beurre blanc, saddle of veal with root vegetables or poached chicken. Equally good with aged hard cheese such as Comté.
Special features
Kühling-Gillot and Battenfeld-Spanier are two VDP estates united under one biodynamic signature. The Grosses Gewächse from Pettenthal, Hipping and Rothenberg rank among the finest German Rieslings. Bottled by the Carolin Spanier-Gillot estate in Bodenheim, Rheinhessen.
