About this wine

Character

Concentrated and dense, yet cool and vibrant. The aroma is deep and intense; the wine is right at the beginning of its development and carries great potential to evolve.

Terroir and origin

The Ölberg runs through the central part of the Roter Hang in an east-west direction as a widely spread grand cru site and is the estate's southernmost vineyard; it is the only one of its Roter Hang sites with full south exposure. Kühling-Gillot's plot rises at a gradient of over 60 percent, a classic steep site with heavily fissured rocky soil and laborious vineyard work. The red clay slate, ground down over millions of years, replaces the humus layer here; the soil is porous and permeable. The south-facing parcel acts as a heat reservoir, allowing the grapes to reach full physiological ripeness evenly.

Grape variety and winemaking

100 percent Riesling, dry, 12.5% vol. The estate has farmed biodynamically since 2005, using preparations 500 and 501 and following the rhythm of the lunar phases. In the cellar: spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks and steel tanks, minimal use of sulphur, no fining agents.

On the palate

Juicy, dense, oily in texture: plenty of yellow fruit, plenty of citrus, along with salinity and vibrant acidity. On the nose, orange, orange oil and lemon, underscored by Mediterranean herbs and spicy notes of undergrowth.

Food pairings

With crab tartare with caviar, with char with buttermilk, cucumber, potato and green herbs and with vegetarian sushi with nori seaweed. Generally with crustaceans, fish and anything from the sea.

Special features

The name Ölberg refers to a former monastery and its biblical connection; the proportion of essential oils is particularly high in the wines from this site. Be sure to decant and serve not too cold in large glasses.
