About this wine

Character

A Grosses Gewächs built on tension rather than fullness. The 2020 stays dry and lean, the acidity sets the direction, the fruit remains cool and clear. Transparency over effect: that's how this estate works.

Terroir and origin

The St. Nikolaus vineyard lies in Oestrich-Winkel in the Rheingau, where Jacobus Kühn founded the estate in 1786. Today Peter Bernhard and Viktoria run the estate in its twelfth generation. Across 21 hectares grows almost exclusively Riesling, rooted in slate and quartzite. The VDP classified several of the estate's vineyards as Grosses Gewächs, including St. Nikolaus.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling. Restraint governs the cellar: spontaneous fermentation, unfined, minimal use of sulphur, no heavy oak and no extended ageing, so that slate and quartzite come through unfiltered. Before joining the estate in 2012, Peter Bernhard Kühn worked at Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace and with Burgundy producers, gaining a finer feel for acid structure and extraction. The contours have been sharper ever since.

On the palate

Cool citrus fruit, green apple and white peach, with a touch of herbal spice. The wine runs taut and linear, the acidity carries the dense extract, the salty, mineral backbone holds through the long finish.

Special features

When Peter Jakob Kühn switched to biodynamic farming in the early 2000s, it was considered eccentric in the Rheingau: sheep between the vine rows, horn manure and valerian. Since 2009 the estate has carried the Demeter seal, with the logo featured on the label.
