About this wine

Character

Medium straw yellow in the glass, topped by a fragrant, open-knit nose: jasmine and other blossoms, fresh grapes, distinct slaty spice, alongside hints of herbs and light citrus notes. A Riesling with tremendous vibrancy, pure but not purist.

Terroir and origin

The Burrweiler Schäwer is a slate vineyard almost unique in the region, extending down to 300 metres below the edge of the forest. Slate is one of four soil types the Rebholz family farms across 26 hectares on the edge of the Palatinate Forest near Siebeldingen, biodynamically and without compromise in dry-style ageing. Hansjörg and Birgit Rebholz now run the estate together with their twin sons Hans and Valentin.

Grape variety and vinification

Riesling, destemmed and left on the skins for 24 hours. After settling and natural sedimentation, the wine fermented in stainless steel, then rested for six months on fine lees. 12.0% ABV, dry and fully fermented.

On the palate

Light silkiness, savoury notes and good grip. The mid-palate is driven by a tonic mix of acidity, slate minerality and tangy, savoury citrus zest accents. Plenty of energy at just 12.0% ABV: the wine stretches out in length rather than building weight.

Special features

The Schäwer is the Rebholz brothers' fourth Riesling Grand Cru and the only one from a slate vineyard. At Ökonomierat Rebholz, it is the terroir that speaks — for four generations now: bone-dry ageing, crystalline precision, nothing that masks the soil in the glass.
