About this wine

Character

The Rubatsch 2020 is a single-varietal Lagrein from South Tyrol, produced biodynamically by the Manincor estate in Caldaro. The colour is a dense violet-red, black at the core, with minimal lightening towards the rim. On the nose blackberry, elderberry and sour cherry, along with a hint of vanilla and the herbal notes of rosemary, thyme and ivy, underpinned by peaty notes.

Terroir and origin

Two-thirds of the grapes come from the Rubatsch site near Terlano, a southwest-facing slope at 250 metres with sandy soil over weathered porphyry rock; this is the source of finesse and elegance. The remaining third grows at the Seehof in Caldaro, also at 250 metres, with a lake view and a subsoil of loamy limestone gravel; this parcel lends power and structure.

Grape variety and vinification

Lagrein, fermented spontaneously with the grapes' own yeasts on the skins in a wooden vat. Two weeks of maceration with daily punch-downs of the cap allowed for a gentle extraction of colour and tannins. This is followed by sixteen months of ageing in barriques, of which only one in five was new.

On the palate

Fresh, youthful tannins meet juicy dark fruit, carried by saline minerality and spice. Dry, 13.0% ABV. Already an appealing wine at this stage.

Food pairings

With intense meat and braised dishes: braised veal cheeks with pumpkin and polenta, beef tagliata with balsamic, wild herb salad and berry fruits or beetroot risotto with walnuts and thyme.

Special features

Manincor has farmed biodynamically since 2005; Michael Graf Goëss-Enzenberg and estate director Helmuth Zozin let all red wines ferment spontaneously. The cellar, built into the hillside, works by gravity rather than pumps. Presented here in the 1500-millilitre magnum.
