About this wine

Character

A Pinot Noir where earthy and fruity notes balance each other: full and dense on the nose, yet fresh. Domaine Bruno Clair in Marsannay-la-Côte stands for clear, juicy fruit, fine austerity and a taut, saline line; the reds are slender in build yet deep, with silky tannin and a long mineral pull.

Terroir and origin

1.14 hectares of Pinot Noir on a plot within the 1er Cru Les Hauts Jarrons, east-facing on clay-limestone, stony soil. Originally planted in 1902, with individual vines replaced as needed over time. The estate farms 27 hectares across eight villages of the Côte d'Or and produces 32 appellations; cover crops and the avoidance of herbicides have long been standard practice.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Noir. Fermentation takes place with 20 to 30 percent whole clusters and natural yeasts in open wooden vats, with the cap punched down by hand. This is followed by 18 to 20 months of barrel ageing with around 40 percent new oak. In the cellar the rule is: as much as necessary, as little as possible, keeping extraction measured. The wines rest long enough to be bottled without fining.

On the palate

The nose shows juicy sweet and sour cherries, raspberries and wild strawberries with hints of violet and rose, undergrowth, fine wood and sweet spices. On the palate the fruit ranges between red and black berries, cherries and a hint of blood orange. The tannin is firm and medium-grained, the acidity vibrant and flowing, the finish long. 13.0% vol., dry.

Special features

Bruno Clair founded the estate in 1986 from seven hectares inherited following the dissolution of Clair-Daü. His son Edouard has worked alongside him since 2010, joined by Margaux and Arthur since 2018; the next generation is increasing the share of whole clusters and lowering sulphur levels.
