About this wine
Character
A nobly sweet Riesling that brings little weight to the palate and plenty of tension. Kai Schätzel calls this Auslese the purest of his era: the concentration of a Trockenbeerenauslese with the freshness of a Kabinett. 7.0 percent alcohol, crystal-clear fruit, not a gram of heaviness.
Terroir and origin
The Grosse Lage Pettenthal belongs to the Nierstein Roter Hang, where the vines grow on extremely steep parcels. The reddish-brown clay shale of the Rotliegend gives the wines an earthy, mineral character, almost saline. The Schätzel family has been farming its parcels here since 1350 and still vinifies today in the more than 800-year-old wooden-cask cellar in Nierstein, which Kai Schätzel has run since 2008.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling. After harvest, the whole clusters are pressed and fermentation starts spontaneously in a used 600-litre cask. The wine matures there for eight months before early bottling. 185 grams of residual sugar per litre stand against 13 grams of acidity.
On the palate
The nose shows ripe yellow apples, white peach and mirabelle plum, with a subtle flash of red fruit recalling raspberry and rosehip. Quiet notes of turmeric and dried fruit follow, while marjoram and chervil add an herbal contrast. On the palate the Auslese stays light-footed and dancing: a turn around the mirabelle, a turn around the peach, spice and herbs as brief accents, then the interplay begins anew.
Distinctive features
The estate has been Demeter-certified since 2023, with the logo on the label, and has been a VDP member since 2016. Kai Schätzel's credo: lighter, longer, and sometimes a little wilder.
