About this wine

Character

A Teroldego that draws its appeal from the tension between nose and palate: open and expressive on the nose, disciplined and restrained on the palate. Dry, 12.5% vol., austere extract and a driving pulse rather than fruit fullness.

Terroir and origin

The Campo Rotaliano sits like a recess of the Adige valley between the mountain ridges. The Noce river has deposited limestone, granite and porphyry debris here over centuries, and the individual microzones differ according to their soils. The Sgarzon vineyard, meaning "shoot" in Trentino dialect, comprises 2.5 hectares of gravelly and sandy alluvial soils. The vines are particularly vigorous here, and the cooler climate gives the Teroldego its unusual freshness.

Grape variety and vinification

Teroldego, the variety that Elisabetta Foradori has been reviving since 1984 through meticulous clonal selection, together with the University of Milan and the San Michele research centre. The Sgarzon ferments spontaneously and is aged for eight months with skin contact in amphorae, tinajas from Villarrobledo in Spain. Annual production averages around 12,000 bottles.

On the palate

The nose speaks of black cherry, wild plum, elderberry and cranberry, along with mallow, vegetal notes and a touch of dark tobacco. On the palate, the wine holds firm: taut body, austere extract, a lively, invigorating acidity that drives the wine, and a joyfully fruity finish.

Food pairings

Pecorino with apple and black pepper, grilled sardines with fennel salad or grilled salsiccia with fennel seed.

Notable features

The estate farms 28 hectares under Demeter certification, 80 percent of it Teroldego; the Demeter logo appears on the label. Emilio Foradori has led winemaking since 2013. This bottle is a magnum of 1500 ml.
