About this wine
Character
The Spätburgunder Im Sonnenschein GG 2020 is a bone-dry Pinot Noir from the Südpfalz whose stature comes from structure rather than sheer body. It stays cool, clear and fully fermented through, its 13.0% vol. carrying the fruit without weight. This is the crystalline precision that the Grosses Gewächs wines from this site are known for.
Terroir and origin
The monopole vineyard Im Sonnenschein lies near Siebeldingen on the edge of the Palatinate Forest. The Rebholz family farms 26 hectares in total across four geological formations, from Rotliegend through variegated sandstone and shale to shell limestone. Im Sonnenschein is shaped by shell limestone, which lends fine acid structure and gives the Pinot Noir a saline tension. The estate's top sites are farmed biodynamically.
Grape variety and vinification
A varietal Spätburgunder, made in the house style without oenological cosmetics: fully fermented, dry, nothing softened. This lineage dates back to 1889, when great-grandfather Eduard Rebholz began his natural wine philosophy; today Hansjörg and Birgit Rebholz run the estate together with their twin sons Hans and Valentin.
On the palate
The opening brings ripe dark cherry and wild berries, underscored by a restrained oak spice. The tannin is firm and fine-grained, the fruit lean rather than sweet, the finish saline and dry. A red wine that puts origin above volume.
