About this wine
Character
The Tannenberg is the Sauvignon Blanc of Manincor's Herz line, the estate of Michael Graf Goëss-Enzenberg in Kaltern. A cool-edged white wine that draws its tension from the soil: stony, saline, with a roughness that carries it.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in Lieben Aich in Terlano, on a southwest-facing slope at 300 metres above sea level with a mild, airy microclimate. The soil is permeable sandy loam over weathered porphyry, considered the estate's most mineral-rich soil. Manincor has farmed biodynamically since 2005.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Sauvignon Blanc. The destemmed berries stayed on the press for twelve hours of maceration to draw aroma and structure from the skins. Fermentation happened spontaneously with the grapes' own yeasts in oak, followed by ten months of ageing on the fine lees. 12.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
Bright, light golden yellow in the glass. The nose is intensely scented with grapefruit, elderflower and elderwood; with a little air, mango, papaya and green gooseberry emerge, underscored by a penetrating wet-stone minerality. On the palate it stays dry and thoroughly mineral, the stony aromas intense on the tongue, held together by a saline edge, invigorating acidity and tannic grip.
Food pairings
A fine companion to hearty preparations of fish and meat, as well as to intensely flavoured vegetable dishes.
Special features
The cellar is built into the slope and relies on gravity rather than pumps, the cool rock keeping temperatures constant. Two thirds of the white wines ferment spontaneously, and herbal teas replace synthetic sprays. Estate director Helmuth Zozin has run the operation together with the owner since 2008.
