About this wine
Character
A cool, pure-toned Welschriesling that favours clarity over opulence. Lean in structure, with a perceptible edge and a saline pull. The fruit stays understated, wrapped in cold smoke and chalky nuances.
Terroir and origin
The Ottenberg Veitlhansl vineyard lies above the village of Ehrenhausen on a high plateau, around 330 metres above sea level. The vines are rooted in limestone sandstone topped with loamy clay. This chalky signature runs through the entire wine.
Grape variety and vinification
A varietal Welschriesling from vines that were exactly 26 years old at the time of harvest. After spontaneous fermentation, the wine matures for 24 months on fine lees in neutral 500-litre barrels, bottled without any filtration. 12.0% ABV, dry.
On the palate
Clear and taut, yet juicy and eminently drinkable. The aromas from the nose return, mirabelle plum, white peach and nashi pear, joined by pale blossom, lemon balm and nettle. Acidity and salinity balance each other with precision, while the long lees ageing shows only subtly.
Food pairings
With papaya-mango salad with peanuts and silken tofu, with grilled green asparagus alongside a warm pan of potatoes, broccoli and mint, and with steamed char with creamy kohlrabi and chive oil.
Special features
The Tement estate in Ehrenhausen farms nearly 100 hectares and began its conversion to biodynamic viticulture in 2017; Armin Tement oversees viticulture and cellar work. Spontaneous fermentation, two years in neutral wood and unfiltered bottling give this variety an unusual substance here.
