About this wine
Character
A red wine with real drive: concentrated, densely structured, yet juicy and elegant. Length, depth and tension are all there, complemented by an earthy minerality that gives it real depth.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from various vineyards in the villages of Laguardia and Elvillar. Some plots lie in the warmer Ebro valley at 450 metres, others as high as 700 metres in the cooler climate of the Sierra Cantabria. The soils are variously limestone, clay and stony. This diversity produces a cross-section of the terroirs of the Basque Rioja, exemplary of the Alavesa.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Tempranillo from organically farmed plots, without herbicides or synthetic chemicals. Juan Carlos López de Lacalle ferments in open vats for gentle extraction; the wine is aged for 12 months in oak barrels. 14.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
The nose is austere and mineral at first, invigorating and intense; with aeration, dark and red fruit emerges, more dark than red, as is typical of the higher elevations of the Rioja Alavesa. The palate entry is powerful and firm, the body medium, the acidity precise. The chalky tannin carries through a long finish. While young, the wine benefits from decanting.
Food pairings
Saddle of venison and other game, as well as vegetable-based summer salads.
Special features
Artadi is among the pioneers of Spain's shift from cellar-driven to terroir-driven winemaking. At the end of 2015, the winery left the DOCa Rioja because its regulations did not allow the plot's origin to appear on the label. Vinification still takes place in Laguardia. The wine is organic-certified.
