About this wine

Character

A nobly sweet Riesling that concentrates its sweetness rather than spreading it out. 156 g/l residual sugar meets 10.6 g/l acidity, and this ratio gives the wine drive. At 7.5% ABV, it remains light.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from the terraced, steep Enkircher Ellergrub vineyard on the Middle Mosel. The soil is hard blue slate with abundant quartzite inclusions. Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler have farmed their four hectares entirely on their own since 2005; on slopes reaching up to 70 percent gradient, every step of the work is done by hand.

Grape variety and vinification

Riesling from ungrafted vines, on average over 100 years old. They still yield just 15 hl/ha. The many wet days during the 2023 harvest called for intensive selection, and in the end only 300 litres made it into the books. Ageing took place in a small stainless-steel tank, as is the case for all of the estate's sweet wines.

On the palate

The first sip is opulent and flows like nectar, then the wine opens up and reveals its accents: turmeric, saffron and candied ginger are clearly recognisable, while dried herbs add liveliness. The fruit remains as multifaceted as on the nose, with powerful acidity and the vineyard's stony structure flanking the sweetness. The finish lingers on for a long time.

Special features

Analytically, the wine would sit closer to Beerenauslese level, but the winemaking couple made a stylistic decision and bottled it as an Auslese: sensorially, it presents as a taut, highly drinkable Auslese. Over 80 percent of the estate's vineyard area is ungrafted and has never been grafted onto American rootstock. Weiser-Künstler are members of the "Klitzekleiner Ring", dedicated to preserving old Riesling vines.
