About this wine
Character
A dry Mosel Riesling that gets by on 11.5% ABV yet is densely built. The fruit gathers into a tight, powerful stream, dark and deep. The 2022 vintage, marked by drought, tended to produce lighter wines; here that shows as concentration without weight.
Terroir and origin
The terraced, steep Enkircher Ellergrub site on the Middle Mosel: blue, hard slate with abundant quartz inclusions. The ungrafted vines average over 100 years old. Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler have managed their four hectares themselves since 2005; with slopes as steep as 70%, every step of the work remains done by hand.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling. The old vines now yield just 15 hl/ha. After around a day of skin contact, fermented in tonneau, then aged on full lees in used barriques until September of the following year, without racking or additives. After racking, a further year on fine lees follows.
On the palate
Tightly knit and concentrated, yet light-footed: pear, peach and lemon meet jasmine tea and a herbal infusion of lemon balm, lemon thyme and coriander. Tea-like phenolics lend structure, a fine tannic note supports the fruit and herbs. The 7.8 g/l acidity is well integrated, and the 9 g/l residual sugar reads as noticeably less. The stony finish lingers for minutes.
Food pairings
With steamed turbot with lemon thyme, Thai curry with kaffir lime and coriander or pan-fried sole fillet on fennel vegetables. Also pairs well with sushi, cured char and mature Comté.
Special features
Over 80% of the estate's vineyard area is ungrafted, never grafted onto American rootstocks. Weiser-Künstler belongs to the «Klitzekleiner Ring», an association dedicated to preserving old Riesling vines. The wise owl watches over the label of the antique-blue Schlegel bottle.
