About this wine

Character

A Grosses Gewächs made from Pinot Blanc that draws its depth from limestone and needs no oak at all. In the glass, the 2024 vintage still gives little away: pencil shavings, apple and pear, a touch of mango and starfruit, along with garden herbs and stone. Fruit-driven and creamy in structure, but still reserved on the nose.

Terroir and origin

The Mandelberg lies southwest of Birkweiler. The parcels this wine comes from sit at around 250 metres above sea level and face southeast. The rise runs from the Hohenberg to the Rauhberg and forms a fault line of the Rhine Rift: Rotliegend from the Permian, Buntsandstein, shell limestone and Keuper from the Triassic. The Pinot Blanc grows mainly on the shell limestone, which is interspersed with loam and somewhat deeper.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Blanc from Siebeldingen, where Hansjörg Rebholz farms 26 hectares across four soil types biodynamically. The wine was pressed slowly in the basket press, fermented spontaneously in stainless steel and saw no oak. 13.0% vol., dry.

On the palate

Present, juicy and powerful. White- and yellow-fleshed native fruit, exotic notes and hints of citrus come through far more clearly here than on the nose, alongside a slightly vegetal note, stone dust and herbs. Deep, long, creamy and very pure, carried by the typical shell-limestone acidity.

Special features

At Ökonomierat Rebholz, the Mandelberg is the site reserved for Pinot Blanc Grosses Gewächs. Spontaneous fermentation, no oak character, fermented fully dry to the bone: purism as a working principle, terroir as compass.
