About this wine
Character
A Champagne built on tension and salinity rather than richness. Cool, linear, invigorating, with a dry herbal spice as its recurring theme and a fruit character that deliberately stays in the background.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come exclusively from the Tarlant family's own vineyards in Œuilly. 14 hectares, spread across more than 55 parcels, farmed organically, without herbicides or synthetic pesticides. Benoît and Mélanie Tarlant run the estate, founded in 1687, now in its twelfth generation.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier at 32 percent each, plus 4 percent Pinot Blanc, Arbanne and Petit Meslier. Based on the 2017 vintage, supplemented with reserve wines. Fermented in wood barrels with wild yeasts, without malolactic fermentation. Bottled for second fermentation in April 2018, disgorged only in July 2023 — after more than five years on the lees — with no dosage.
On the palate
The bead offers a brief lift and creaminess, then the acidity takes over and pulls the wine taut through the finish. Saline-mineral, full of herbal freshness, with a subtle, almost unripe fruit character in the background. On the finish, salinity and citrus, along with a freshness reminiscent of tequila.
Food pairings
With fresh oysters, mackerel sashimi, seafood tartare or mature Comté.
Special features
Brut Nature here means: not a single gram of sugar after the second fermentation. Tarlant has been bottling without dosage since the late 1970s, and today over 90 percent of production is Brut Nature. Nothing can be corrected, so the wine has to carry itself.
