About this wine

Character

A Tempranillo that brings together concentration and lightness: cool, silky, generous in fruit yet never opulent.

Terroir and origin

The La Poza de Ballesteros vineyard lies at 600 metres altitude in Elvillar de Álava, covers 5.6 hectares and faces entirely west. The soil is deep, clay-rich limestone. Vinification takes place in Laguardia, where Juan Carlos López de Lacalle founded the estate in 1985.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Tempranillo from vines planted in 1960. The soils are farmed organically, without herbicides or synthetic chemicals, partly using horse ploughing. In the cellar, open fermentation vats allow gentle extraction, complemented by French barriques; the oak influence stays discreet and never masks the terroir.

On the palate

The nose opens with intensity, showing blue and violet flowers, followed by blackberry, blueberry, cassis, fig and sweet cherry. It turns darker with melted dark chocolate, roasted coffee and liquorice, cools with eucalyptus and peppermint, and closes with a delicate note of coconut. On the palate, the wine integrates alcohol and fruit concentration so seamlessly that no sense of heaviness arises. Chocolate and liquorice return, and the finish alternates between floral and fruity notes.

Food pairing recommendations

With braised lamb shoulder with lamb jus, red cabbage and potato-truffle gratin, with grilled venison saddle with chestnuts, Brussels sprouts and pan-fried Schupfnudeln, or in a vegetarian version with braised chicory with blackberries.

Highlights

This plot belongs to the Single Plot Wines series, whose grapes once went into the Pagos Viejos cuvée. At the end of 2015, Artadi left the DOCa Rioja, whose regulations placed ageing categories above individual plot names; there is accordingly no Reserva or Gran Reserva here.
