About this wine
Character
Here Vietti crafts the classic Barolo in an approachable, open style without dulling its edge. The fruit appears measured rather than loud: wild strawberry, sour cherry and barberry, framed by green walnut and roasted hazelnut. Behind these lie damp forest floor, undergrowth and moss, along with black pepper, juniper and generous sage. The bouquet carries a bloody, ferrous quality.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from a wealth of outstanding cru sites spread across the townships of the entire Barolo region. The soils consist of calcareous marl, varying in composition from site to site. Vietti has been based in Castiglione Falletto since 1873 and farms 75 hectares, including Brunate, Lazzarito, Ravera, Cerequio, Monvigliero and Villero.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Nebbiolo. Trained on wire trellises with Guyot pruning, planting density around 4,500 vines per hectare, average vine age between 10 and 45 years. 14.5% vol., vinified dry.
On the palate
The acidity is vigorous, drawing the fruit out into a long finish. The tannic structure is present and well anchored, while the mouthfeel remains velvety. Fruit and bitter notes complement one another, and the wine reveals itself as both fleshy and bloody. The finish returns to the spicy notes of forest and herbs.
Food pairings
Braised venison shoulder with savoy cabbage and pommes dauphine, oyster mushroom tacos or oven-roasted aubergine with Mediterranean herbs and fried garlic.
Special features
Since 1974, the bottles have featured original artworks by various artists, including a drawing by Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 1961, Alfredo Currado was the first to vinify individual vineyards separately; Rocche di Castiglione and Barbaresco Masseria thus became the region's first cru wines. In 2025, Doctor Wine named Vietti Azienda dell'Anno.
