About this wine
Character
The Riesling Kirchenstück GG 2023 is a dry Grosses Gewächs from Rheinhessen at 12.5% vol., holding power and coolness in balance. The nose is deep and juicy: bitter lemon, mint and herbs meet red berries, along with pepper, smoke, stone and a hint of pistachio. In the glass, a medium straw yellow.
Terroir and origin
The Kirchenstück in Hohen-Sülzen was already mentioned before the Thirty Years' War and has thus carried vines for more than 400 years. The hillside site sits at 150 metres with a 15% gradient. Clay-rich, limestone stones that can be crumbled by hand supply the vines with good nutrients; the minerals of the strongly calcareous subsoil translate directly into the wine.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling from the ancient heart of the vineyard, home to Hans Oliver Spanier's oldest vines, planted in the 1960s. Hand selection and harvest, spontaneous fermentation, aged in large oak casks and double casks. Battenfeld-Spanier has farmed biodynamically since 2005: preparations 500 and 501, minimal use of sulphur, no fining agents.
On the palate
A fleshy opening, lightly smoky, with yellow spice at its core, carried by an undercurrent of energy. This grows more pronounced by the second, the Riesling gathers momentum and becomes ever more saline and mouth-watering. Finesse, power and tension sit close together throughout.
Special features
A site that has carried vines for more than four centuries, home to the estate's oldest vineyard. Remarkable is the red-berry note in a dry Riesling, set within a structure that remains both fleshy and cool.
