About this wine
Character
The Riesling Hohen-Sülzen VDP Erste Lage "Treasure Collection" 2021 is a dry limestone Riesling from the Wonnegau district of Rheinhessen, released only after years in the estate's maturation cellar as a Late Release. Golden yellow with green highlights, with an intense nose of peach, apricot, mirabelle plum and plenty of lemon, alongside cool stony notes, dry pastry and shell notes.
Terroir and origin
Hohen-Sülzen lies in the Wonnegau, whose limestone slopes carry the grapes for this wine: limestone and shell limestone. These soils give Battenfeld-Spanier's Riesling a taut, cool texture with saline precision. The estate has farmed biodynamically since 2005, regularly applying preparations 500 and 501, with lunar phases setting the rhythm of vineyard work.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling, hand-harvested and strictly selected. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously, maturation takes place in a large old double-barrel cask, and the wine remains on its lees well into spring. In the cellar, the approach is to accompany rather than correct: minimal use of sulfur, no fining agents. 12.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Cool freshness and taut acidity carry the wine. Lemon and salinity combine into a razor-sharp, mouth-watering structure, with delicate tannin providing backbone. The finish is powerful and long, promising outstanding aging potential.
Special features
The Treasure Collection stems from a long-held plan by Hans Oliver Spanier. Completed in 2020, the underground maturation cellar simulates the conditions of a natural cave, giving wines with extended lees aging a prolonged maturation phase under consistent conditions. The special "treasure collection" designation on the label guarantees this provenance.
