About this wine
Character
An aromatized wine on a Barolo base: Nebbiolo infused with quinine bark and roots, sweetened and fortified to 18.0% vol. The result is dense and warming, with a bitter edge that keeps the noble sweetness in check. A wine for the late-evening glass.
Terroir and origin
The base comes from the estate's sites in Barolo, Monforte d'Alba and Serralunga. The family farms eleven hectares there, exclusively organic-certified since 2014. Chiara Boschis was the first to convert plots in Cannubi to organic cultivation and, through the Cannubi Bio project, brought around 80 percent of that cru's growers to do the same by 2015.
Grape variety and vinification
100 percent Nebbiolo. The finished wine is flavored, sweetened and fortified according to a family recipe with quinine bark (Calisaya), gentian root, rhubarb and other spices.
On the palate
Garnet red with brick-red reflections in the glass. On the nose, quinine bark, clove, cinnamon and dried orange peel, with ripe red berries and herbs beneath. The entry is velvety and sweet, the Nebbiolo's tannin draws the structure tight, and the bitter note of the bark carries through the long finish.
Food pairing recommendations
Dark chocolate from 70 percent cocoa, Piedmontese hazelnut pastries such as Baci di Dama, warm hazelnut cake or aged blue cheese. Equally good enjoyed alone as a digestif after a meal.
Special features
The name honors Beatrice, one of three daughters of Giorgio Boschis, who returned to the family estate in 2010. Chiara Boschis took over as head of the estate in 1990, the first woman to own and run a winery in the Langhe. Bottled at 500 ml.
