About this wine
Character
The Brunello di Montalcino 2020 from Le Chiuse is a single-varietal Sangiovese from the cool northeastern flank of Montosoli, pale in colour and built on tension. Up front are wild woodland strawberry and sour cherry, followed by rose and violet. Rated 98 points by Kerin O'Keefe, and 96 points each by Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck and Decanter.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow in Località Valdicava, seven hectares of pure Sangiovese on two levels: a lower terrace at around 300 metres, an upper one at nearly 500 metres above sea level, high enough for cool August nights. Beneath lies galestro schist, calcareous marl and clay with a core of volcanic tuff. The grapes were picked on 17 September 2020, with a yield of around 50 hectolitres per hectare, half of what the consortium permits.
Grape variety and vinification
100 percent Sangiovese Grosso from a mass selection of clone BS 11, personally selected by Ferruccio Biondi Santi on these slopes some 120 years ago. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, maceration at around 29 degrees, followed by 36 months exclusively in large 30-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks, no barrique. The cellar operates by gravity, with the wine flowing purely by gradient, without pumps.
On the palate
Silky entry, then fennel seed, dried sage leaves and autumn leaves over fine-grained, firm tannins. 14% ABV, carried by a citrus tension that keeps the finish open. In the double magnum the wine ages more slowly, with a drinking window extending to 2046.
Food pairings
Wild pigeon on lentils, tagliatelle with hare ragù, bistecca alla fiorentina with rosemary, finishing with aged Pecorino di Pienza.
Highlights
Le Chiuse has belonged to the same family since 1790. Until 1990, the entire harvest went anonymously to Il Greppo; it was only in 1993 that Simonetta Valiani bottled her first own-label Brunello. Today her son Lorenzo Magnelli runs the cellar.
