About this wine
Character
Pure Chardonnay from the Chouilly Grand Cru, bottled in Magnum. The cuvée is based on the 2022 vintage, complemented by reserve wines that add depth without softening its tension. A Blanc de Blancs of chalky precision and saline freshness.
Terroir and origin
Chouilly is the northernmost Grand Cru of the Côte des Blancs, where the chalk soils are especially pure. Jean-Pierre and Caroline Vazart run the house in its third generation, farming eleven hectares spread across 30 parcels, including a share of the prized Montaigu. The vines average 44 years of age and root deep into the limestone. The historic seat remains, to this day, the red-brick house built by Louis-Victor Coquart in 1865.
Grape variety and vinification
Exclusively Chardonnay. The base wines are aged in stainless steel rather than oak, so that the terroir speaks rather than the barrel. From 1982 the family maintained a Réserve Perpétuelle; in 2020 Jean-Pierre Vazart gave it up in favour of organic farming, as conventionally grown reserve wines could no longer be blended in. The Champagne stands at 12.5% vol., with dosage in the brut range.
On the palate
Pale golden yellow with a fine, persistent bead. On the nose, lemon zest, white peach and yellow pear, along with white blossom and wet chalk. On the palate, lively acidity and fine creaminess, green apple and brioche, with a long, saline finish.
Food pairing
Oysters and seafood, scallops with lemon beurre blanc, grilled turbot, as well as mildly aged Comté or goat's cheese.
Special features
In Magnum, the Champagne matures more slowly and gains in complexity. Vazart-Coquart & Fils is regarded as Chouilly's foremost grower-Champagne house and has belonged to the Spécial Club association since 1996.
