About this wine

Character

The Rosé Extra Brut 2022+Res. is a rosé Champagne from Chouilly, the northernmost Grand Cru of the Côte des Blancs, made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It offers aromas of strawberry, raspberry and redcurrant, joined by citrus, white blossom and fine herbs, underpinned by wet chalk. Slender in build, carried by saline freshness, powerful without being opulent.

Terroir and origin

Chouilly marks the northern end of the Côte des Blancs, where the vines root deep into chalk and limestone. Jean-Pierre and Caroline Vazart run Vazart-Coquart & Fils in the third generation; the estate's home is the red-brick house built by Louis-Victor Coquart in 1865. The estate comprises 11 hectares spread across 30 parcels, with vines averaging 44 years of age.

Grape variety and vinification

The blend unites Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: structure and red fruit from one, silky precision from the other. The base is the 2022 vintage, supplemented with reserve wines. Fermentation and ageing take place in stainless steel rather than oak, as the house favours precision and wants the terroir in the glass, not a note of wood. The dosage stays low, Extra Brut, at 12.5% vol.

On the palate

Taut attack, vibrant acidity, silky texture. The finish lingers long with a mineral-saline character; the low dosage lets the red fruit come through dry and clear.

Food pairing recommendations

Fine starters work well: salmon tartare, tuna tartare with avocado or grilled salmon with fennel salad. Equally suited to light poultry with mushrooms, duck breast with cherries and semi-matured Comté.

Special features

In 2020, Jean-Pierre Vazart switched to organic farming, giving up the Réserve Perpétuelle begun in 1982, as reserve wines from conventional farming could no longer be blended in. The house has belonged to the Spécial Club since 1996.
