About this wine
Character
A Grand Cru at its earliest stage: the 2022 needs time and belongs in a decanter. It then shows youthful vigour, tension and a coherence that is far from a given at this great site.
Terroir and origin
The wine comes from vines in the Grand Cru Clos Vougeot. Yann Charlopin and Justine Tissier founded their domaine in 2013, based in Morey-Saint-Denis since 2015. A little over four hectares in the Côte de Nuits are spread across Marsannay, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée and this parcel in Clos Vougeot.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, destemmed, cold pre-fermented and spontaneously fermented. The wine then matures slowly on the fine lees, 18 months in 228-litre barrels, mainly from François Frères, with 75 to 100 percent new oak.
On the palate
The nose has something ethereal about it: mint, iodine and lavender, gradually joined by sweet and sour cherries, wild strawberries, raspberries and firm plums, followed by undergrowth, foliage and forest floor, with a touch of clove and new oak. Sweetly silky yet firm tannin carries ripe, juicy, fleshy yet crisp fruit. Deep and powerful, with red-berry and cherry notes, sensually juicy, with a cool, mineral and slightly saline finish.
Food pairings
Grilled Bresse chicken stuffed with liver terrine, served with a wild herb salad, capon stuffed with porcini or beef rump tataki with a cassis-soy marinade.
Special features
Yann Charlopin learned his craft in the cellar of his father Philippe Charlopin, a close collaborator of Henri Jayer, and refined it further under Jean-Marie Fourrier. The domaine's wines feature on the lists of The French Laundry, Quince, SingleThread, Tour d'Argent and Frenchie.
