About this wine
Character
Bright-toned, transparent, carried by cool acidity: this Marsannay favours tension over fullness. Young, it comes across as reductive and lactic, with mixed wild berries and blackcurrant yogurt. Air and time clear the picture, revealing aromas of cherry, plum, herbs, a touch of foliage and undergrowth.
Terroir and origin
The climat Les Longeroies covers 38.32 hectares, of which the domaine farms 1.4 hectares on the mid-slope. The plots span both soil types: limestone in the upper part (Dessus des Longeroies), red marl in the lower part (Bas des Longeroies). The vines are planted at a density of 10,000 per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, fully destemmed. After a cool pre-fermentation maceration, spontaneous fermentation begins with the wine's own yeasts. It then ages slowly for 16 months on fine lees in 228-litre barriques, mainly from François Frères, with 20 to 30% new oak. Sulphur use is minimal, filtration barely perceptible.
On the palate
Juicy and translucent. Decanting before pouring is worthwhile: the reductive, flint-like aromatics then largely give way to cherry and wild berry. Alongside these come piquant, slightly austere, vegetal notes and a cool, acid-driven line. 13.5% ABV, dry.
Food pairing suggestions
Sour kidneys with pinot and rosemary, shawarma with rice and sesame sauce, or baghali rice with falafel, halloumi and vegetables.
Special features
Yann Charlopin trained in his father Philippe Charlopin's cellar and with Jean-Marie Fourrier, before founding his own domaine with Justine Tissier in 2013. Their family owned the Marsannay vineyards where it all began. Today, the domaine's wines feature on the wine lists of The French Laundry and Tour d'Argent.
