About this wine
Character
Deep garnet red. A very young, demanding Marsannay that calls for patience: at first it comes across as lactic and reductive, but blossoms in the decanter. Precisely crafted, cool in tone, with a fresh, tangy thread running through to the long finish.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in the Les Longeroies vineyard in Marsannay, regarded as the gateway to the Côte de Nuits. The vineyards are farmed organically. Yann Charlopin and Justine Tissier founded their domaine in 2013, and their beginnings were in Marsannay, where Justine's family owned vineyards. Today the estate comprises a good four hectares in the Côte de Nuits, with its base in Morey-Saint-Denis.
Grape variety and vinification
100 percent Pinot Noir, fully destemmed, cold pre-fermented and spontaneously fermented with natural yeasts. Ageing takes 18 months on fine lees in 228-litre barriques, mainly from François Frères, with a new oak share below 20 percent. Sulphur use is minimal, filtration barely perceptible. 13.5 percent alcohol, dry.
On the palate
Juicy, pleasantly tannic and cool, with a touch of extract sweetness and meaty fruit. The nose shows forest fruit, cherry and cranberry, along with cassis, cranberry cream, undergrowth, soft wood and a hint of vanilla, with traces of gunpowder lingering at first. Agile acidity, ripe, firm, medium-grained tannin, beautiful length with piquant notes.
Food pairings
Veal kidneys with chanterelles and parsley, porcini stuffed with wild mushrooms, ham and pork belly or venison fillet with black salsify and roasted hazelnuts.
Special features
Yann Charlopin trained in the cellar of his father Philippe Charlopin, who worked closely with Henri Jayer, and afterwards with Jean-Marie Fourrier. The domaine's wines feature on the lists of The French Laundry, Tour d'Argent and Frenchie.
