About this wine
Character
The Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Sous Frétille" blanc 2022 is a dry white Burgundy with a creamy texture and an acidity that gains definition with air. It should be decanted now: the more oxygen it receives, the more tension it shows.
Terroir and origin
The Sous Frétille climat covers 10.25 hectares on the slope of Pernand-Vergelesses, directly bordering Corton. The plot sits almost at the top of the slope and faces largely southeast, so the sun only reaches it around midday. This keeps the site cool, an increasingly valuable advantage in recent years. Charlopin Tissier farms 0.11 hectares here.
Grape variety and vinification
Chardonnay from old vines. After destemming, the wine ferments spontaneously and then matures slowly for 16 months on the fine lees in cigar-shaped 400-litre barrels, mainly from the Atelier Centre France cooperage, with 75 to 100% new oak. Yann Charlopin trained in his father Philippe Charlopin's cellar and with Jean-Marie Fourrier; hand work, spontaneous fermentation and long lees ageing define the estate, which he founded in 2013 together with Justine Tissier.
On the palate
An intense straw yellow in the glass. The nose offers lemon oil, pear crème, lightly toasted nuts and a touch of orange, alongside a smoky note, nutmeg and vanilla with subtle oak. The palate opens creamy and sensuous, with a slight buttery note and fine oak and cinnamon spice from the barrel. With air the acidity becomes lively, and the finish shows excellent length.
Food pairings
Œuf à la dijonnaise, tarte aux poireaux, or smoked Charolais fillet with creamy mustard ice cream.
Special features
The 0.11 hectares represent a small share of the climat, making the quantity produced correspondingly scarce. The wines from this estate, founded in 2013 in Morey-Saint-Denis, appear on the wine lists of The French Laundry, Tour d'Argent and Frenchie.
