About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir of cool definition: dark cherry and wild berries in clear fruit, joined by floral notes of violet and rose and a mineral coolness that gives the wine contour. The tannin is fine-grained, the structure stays taut without turning hard.
Terroir and origin
Charmes-Chambertin lies within the band of Grands Crus in Gevrey-Chambertin on the Côte de Nuits. The Lignier family has farmed vines in Morey-Saint-Denis since the 1880s; Laurent Lignier runs the domaine in its fifth generation and removed synthetic inputs from the vineyards starting in 2007.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, given a long, cool maceration, with a proportion of whole clusters that has grown over the years. New oak is deliberately restrained and spread across four coopers, so that no single barrel leaves its stamp on the wine. The cellar, acquired in 2008 in Morey, works by gravity alone: from the must to bottling, no pump moves the wine.
On the palate
Concentrated and silky, with juicy red and black fruit, fine spice and vibrant acidity. At 13.0% vol., this dry wine is built for length rather than weight, finishing with precision.
Food pairings
Duck breast with a light roasted note, saddle of venison with juniper, coq au vin, sautéed mushrooms with thyme, or a medium-aged Comté. Serve at around 16 degrees and let the wine open up, or lay it down in the cellar for a few years.
Special features
In 1973, amid a sales slump, Hubert Lignier began bottling his wines himself rather than selling them in bulk; the domaine has carried his name ever since. Bottled in Morey-Saint-Denis.
