About this wine
Character
A village wine from Chassagne-Montrachet, crafted by Thomas Morey with elegance and juiciness: clear structure, precise body, plenty of energy.
Terroir and origin
The wine comes from a total of nine parcels. The core is Les Houillères, supplemented by small proportions from En Journoblot and declassified premier crus. Les Houillères was planted in 1989 with a sélection massale and lies on the ridge of the hill as an extension of the Les Enceignères vineyard. The parcel ripens very early and is almost always harvested first. The soils are flat and deep, a red clay-limestone mix.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrel and tank, with malolactic fermentation occurring naturally. The wine remains on its lees without any bâtonnage, and the new oak proportion is around 20%. Sulphur is added only during the last six months in barrel, in several minimal doses, so that the wine never exceeds 35 mg/l. 13.0% ABV, dry.
On the palate
Pale golden yellow. The nose is bright and citrusy, with pome and stone fruit, fine notes of wood and spice, a touch of stone and pâtisserie, with a subtle hint of reduction in the background. On the palate it is round, silky and dense, with gripping acidity, vibrant minerality and a mouth-watering salinity; the oak stays in the background.
Special features
Magnum format of 1500 ml. Thomas Morey represents the tenth generation of a family that has been established in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1643; he founded his own estate in 2007 with his wife Sylvie and farms 13 hectares across seven villages in the Côte de Beaune. He has worked organically since 2011. The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has entrusted him with the care of its vines in Le Montrachet Grand Cru.
