About this wine
Character
A dry Savagnin with an oxidative character that demands attention: walnut, dried herbs and a fine curry spice over yellow apple and nutshell. 14.0% ABV.
Terroir and origin
The En Beaumont parcel lies in Château-Chalon, where Domaine Grand, based in Arbois, farms steep slopes. Since 1692, when Antoine and Claudine Grand began, the family has held vineyards between Arbois and Château-Chalon; today it comprises 9.5 hectares, tended by Nathalie Grand. The soils consist of grey limestone as well as grey and red marl, in places with dolomitic influence, with some parcels carrying vines over 100 years old.
Grape variety and vinification
Savagnin, the Jura's own grape variety. As a Vin de Voile, the wine ages under a veil of flor yeast, which protects it from full oxidation and shapes its nutty, spicy aromas. Emmanuel Grand runs the cellar, using old barrels and minimal sulphur. In 2015, the vintage of this wine, the couple reduced the vineyard area from 24 to 9.5 hectares.
On the palate
Dry and taut, with saline minerality and nutty depth, the finish long and precise. Oxidative in style, but not oxidised.
Food pairings
Comté and mature Gruyère, chicken with morels, walnuts, dried fish, dishes with saffron or curry.
Special features
It was precisely for this Château-Chalon En Beaumont 2015 that the Guide Hachette named Emmanuel and Nathalie Grand "Vignerons de l'année" 2020. The labels are designed by French artist Bast, and the estate bottles around 45,000 bottles a year. This wine comes in a 620 ml bottle.
