About this wine

Character

A Pinot Noir of cool clarity that places its strength in length and structure rather than fullness. Cool cherry, fine-grained tannin, quiet depth. The magnum format allows this build to age especially slowly.

Terroir and origin

The Clos de la Roche Grand Cru lies in Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits and is the heart of Domaine Hubert Lignier. The family has farmed Pinot Noir here since the 1880s: Jacques Lignier bought plots that phylloxera had devalued, his son Jules patiently replanted them, Hubert Lignier took over management in 1959 and began bottling the wine himself from 1973. Today Laurent Lignier runs the estate in its fifth generation.

Grape variety and winemaking

Pinot Noir, vinified dry, 14.0% vol. Long, cool maceration periods precede fermentation; the proportion of whole clusters has grown over the years. Laurent Lignier deliberately holds back on new oak and spreads it across four coopers, so that no single barrel dominates the wine. The cellar in Morey, acquired in 2008, works by gravity alone: from the must to bottling, no pump moves the wine.

On the palate

Taut and precisely drawn, with fine-grained tannin, dark forest berries and violet, a stony note and a long, clear finish.

Food recommendations

Duck breast, saddle of venison with mushrooms, partridge with truffle jus, porcini risotto or aged Époisses.

Special features

Since 2007 the estate has worked without synthetic products in the vineyard, and since 2019 it has held organic certification. Bottled at Domaine Hubert Lignier in Morey-Saint-Denis, here as a 1500ml magnum.
