About this wine

Character

A Grand Cru of cool clarity, precisely drawn and finely built, 13.5% vol., dry and without heaviness. The depth comes from the concentration of the old vines, not from mass.

Terroir and origin

In the climat of Monts Luisants, at the upper edge of the Grand Cru Clos de la Roche in Morey-Saint-Denis, stand twenty-seven rows of vines planted in 1955 by Henri Lignier. From their wood he propagated the estate's other plots in the 1960s, vine by vine. The old vines are prone to millerandage and bear tiny, often seedless berries.

Grape variety and winemaking

Pinot Noir, farmed without synthetic products since 2007. Long, cool macerations precede fermentation, and the proportion of whole clusters has grown over the years. The cellar in Morey works entirely by gravity, from the must to the bottling. New oak is used sparingly and spread across four coopers, so that no single barrel marks the wine.

On the palate

Silky texture, concentrated red cherry, raspberry and strawberry, alongside violet, rose petal, undergrowth and a hint of truffle. Fine-grained tannin, vivid acidity and a mineral edge carry the long finish.

Food pairings

Rare roasted beef fillet, coq au vin and game birds such as pheasant or quail. To finish, aged Comté or Époisses.

Special features

Since 2017, Laurent Lignier has bottled the harvest of this plot separately, as the cuvée MCMLV, Roman numerals for 1955, a tribute to his grandfather. There are barely two barrels per vintage; the bottle ranks among the most sought-after Pinot Noirs of the entire Côte de Nuits. Laurent Lignier runs the estate in its fifth generation.
