About this wine
Character
Deep, powerful and firmly structured, with youthful exuberance and tension: this Clos Vougeot is one of the estate's wines that needs the most time. With plenty of aeration it opens up, and even now one can sense that this is power without heaviness in the making.
Terroir and origin
The vines stand in the Grand Cru Clos Vougeot on the Côte de Nuits. Yann Charlopin and Justine Tissier founded their estate in 2013 in Morey-Saint-Denis and farm just over four hectares, spread across Marsannay, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée and this parcel within the Clos Vougeot.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir from organic, hand-tended vines. The grapes are destemmed, given a cool pre-fermentation maceration and then fermented spontaneously; the wine then matures slowly for 18 months on fine lees in 228-litre barriques, mainly from François Frères, with 75 to 100% new oak. 13.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
With aeration, the nose shows wild strawberry, raspberry and morello cherry, followed by malt, liquorice, clove, undergrowth and foliage, plus new oak of the finest provenance. On the palate, firm phenolics meet ripe extract sweetness, austere and mineral notes; the acidity is well judged, the new oak noticeable and on its way to integrating. Dark and aromatic, already showing hints of silkiness.
Food pairing suggestions
Grilled Bresse chicken stuffed with liver pâté, served with a wild herb salad, capon stuffed with porcini mushrooms, or beef rump tataki with a cassis-shoyu marinade.
Distinctive features
Yann Charlopin is the son of Philippe Charlopin, whose mentor was Henri Jayer; he trained under Jean-Marie Fourrier. The estate's wines appear on the lists of The French Laundry, Tour d'Argent and Frenchie. This Grand Cru deserves time.
