About this wine
Character
«La Gigotte» is a Volnay that favours finesse over power: clearly defined, silky in texture, carried by cherry, raspberry and violet. A Pinot Noir that can be enjoyed young, yet built to age.
Terroir and origin
Domaine Darviot-Perrin is based in Monthélie in the Côte de Beaune, where the Darviot family has farmed parcels since the 19th century, ten generations in the same place. The eleven hectares are spread across Monthélie, Volnay, Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet and include seven Premier Cru vineyards; «La Gigotte» in Volnay is one of them.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, fermented with up to 100 percent whole clusters; the stems lend floral notes and silky tannins. The wine ages in used barrels, at most 25 percent of them new. Pierre-Antonin Darviot, who took over the estate in 2019 at the age of 25 after the death of his father Jacques, has consistently converted it to biodynamic farming. 13.5 percent alcohol, vinified dry.
On the palate
Juicy red fruit, fine-grained tannins and a fresh acidity that holds the line. The finish stays slender and long, with a mineral edge.
Food pairing suggestions
With duck breast in cherry sauce, saddle of venison or braised leg of lamb. Also with coq au vin, porcini risotto and aged Époisses.
Special features
Bottled without fining, without filtration and with minimal use of sulphur. The estate farms biodynamically and has been organic-certified since 2022.
