About this wine
Character
The Monthélie "Les Crayes" from Darviot-Perrin is a red Burgundy made from Pinot Noir, grown in the Côte de Beaune. It shows raspberry and cherry, along with floral notes and a delicate spice from whole-cluster fermentation. Silky, dry, 13.0% ABV.
Terroir and origin
Monthélie lies in the Côte de Beaune, where the Darviot family has owned their parcels since the 19th century. The climat name "Les Crayes" points to chalky, stony limestone soils. In total, the estate farms 11 hectares in Monthélie, Volnay, Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet, including seven premier cru climats.
Grape variety and winemaking
Hand-harvested Pinot Noir. Pierre-Antonin Darviot ferments with up to 100 percent whole clusters; the stems lend floral notes and silky tannins. The wine is aged without fining or filtration, with minimal sulphur use.
On the palate
Juicy and finely structured, with fine-grained tannin and lively acidity. The berry fruit rests on a mineral, chalky base that gives the wine drive all the way through the finish.
Food pairings
With pink-roasted duck breast, tender veal fillet and bœuf bourguignon. Also with roast pheasant with savoy cabbage, mushroom risotto and Époisses.
Special features
Pierre-Antonin Darviot runs the estate in its tenth generation. He studied oenology in Beaune, gained experience in the Loire and in New Zealand, returned in 2017, and took over management in 2019 at age 25 after the death of his father Jacques. Since then, the estate has converted to biodynamic farming.
