About this wine
Character
A red wine of pronounced individuality that shows its power not through weight but through tension: cool-contoured, firm-gripped, with a clear, easy drinking flow. Despite the hot 2022 vintage, freshness and balance take centre stage.
Terroir and origin
The single vineyard San José covers 0.3 hectares and sits at 560 metres above sea level at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. Roberto Oliván farms his parcels around Viñaspre in Rioja Alavesa biodynamically; the soils consist of calcareous marl and sandstone, and the constant wind at these elevations keeps the vines healthy.
Grape variety and vinification
The vineyard was planted in 1952 as a field blend: 40 percent Tempranillo, together with 30 percent each of the white varieties Viura and Malvasia. Oliván harvests all varieties simultaneously and ferments them with the stems included. Ageing takes place in 500-litre wooden barrels that are not new.
On the palate
Purple-red in the glass. The nose shows fresh blue fruit, cool minerality and invigorating herbal notes, focused on the primary fruit. The palate is juicy and multilayered, the tannin fine-grained, and fermentation with the stems lends grip and herbal spice. The 15.5 percent alcohol is fully integrated, and the finish is long.
Food pairing recommendations
Pairs well with Jamón Ibérico and Jamón Serrano.
Highlights
The Escondite del Ardacho vineyard series is named after a native lizard species, depicted on the labels disguised as a human. The fact that red and white grapes grow together in the vineyard, are harvested together and fermented together, reflects the principle of the old field blend and is the reason for this wine's unusual style.
