About this wine
Character
A Rioja built on freshness rather than power. Cherry red in the glass, cool on the nose, dry at 14.5% ABV. Elegant, precise, pared down to the essentials, with a clear imprint of terroir.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow on a tiny 0.4-hectare single vineyard in Viñaspre in the Rioja Alavesa subzone, at 595 metres above sea level on limestone marl and sandstone. The vines, trained in the traditional bush style, are 52 to 112 years old. Roberto Oliván farms his thirty parcels biodynamically and vinifies each one separately.
Grape variety and vinification
A classic field blend of Tempranillo (80%), Garnacha (10%) and ten percent white varieties, including Viura. Harvested and fermented together, 20 percent with whole clusters, spontaneously with native yeasts in an open stainless steel tank with gentle punch-downs. This is followed by nine months in used 500-litre barrels.
On the palate
Lively acidity carries a high aromatic intensity: crisp red and dark fruit, herbs, and an earthy minerality. The tannin is fine-grained, and the wine has grip and length. Oak is imperceptible, as is any overripeness.
Food pairings
With pizza with anchovies, whose saltiness absorbs the wine's acidity, and with sautéed artichokes.
Notable features
2019 was a warm vintage in Rioja, though the wine gives no hint of it. Roberto Oliván has worked in Viñaspre since 2011; the Escondite del Ardacho series translates individual microterroirs of the region into distinct single-vineyard wines.
