About this wine
Character
Here, spice leads and fruit answers. Roasted coffee and cocoa beans, Mediterranean herbs and pepper set the tone, met by the dark berry. A cool, lean and savoury-rustic red wine, built on acidity and contour rather than extraction.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow on the Los Lanos hillside at 525 metres near Elvillar in Rioja Alavesa. The clay soil carries coral limestone and holds little water. The Sierra Cantabria shields the vineyard from Atlantic winds.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Mazuela, known elsewhere as Carignan. The 15-year-old vines are trellis-trained. After hand-harvesting and sorting, the grapes were destemmed and spontaneously fermented at no more than 25°C over 18 days, then aged for 16 months in second-use French barrique. 14.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Juicy and coolly lean at first, with soft tannin. The racy acidity carries through without fading, while the active bitter notes sit beneath the fruit. Above all, elderberry and blackberry push forward, accompanied by juniper, rosemary and black pepper.
Food pairing suggestions
Braised goose legs with roasted potato noodles and crisp bitter salad, rack of lamb under an olive crust with broad beans and rosemary potatoes, or beetroot bake with feta, walnuts and olives.
Special features
Eva Fernández and Luis Ruiz de Viñaspre have farmed around 20 hectares in Elvillar, Viñaspre and Moreda since 2001, biodynamically and in line with Masanobu Fukuoka's philosophy of non-intervention. Together with the Neiker research institute, they work on studies into soil erosion; in the cellar, oak use remains restrained.
